Rams look to end losing skid against Stafford

Oct 9, 2008

Tomorrow night the Rams (1-5, 0-3) host the Bulldogs of Sanfford. Safford is 2-1 in the region knocking off Florence and Santa Cruz thus far.

The Rams are struggling on both sides of the ball this season, so hopefully they can put a nice winning steak together and finish the season strong.

Bears shut out Rams 49 - 0

Sept 21st, 2008

The Rams fell to 1-3 on the season getting shutout and dominated by the Bears from Coolidge.

Coolidge's aerial attack was led by junior QB Charlie Garrett, who threw for six TD's on the night. The running game was led by running back Jeremy White, who found the end zone 35 ticks into the game.

The Rams offensive line failed to protect and give

QB Brian Nechamkin time to make plays. Nechamkin

was sacked ten times through out the course of the game.

The Rams inability to throw the ball gave Coolidge the opportunity to stack eight men in the box and control the line of scrimmage.

Rams host Coolidge Fri night

Sept 18th, 2008

The Rams kick off regional play at home Friday night against the (0-2) Bears of Coolidge.

The Rams are (1-2) going into Regional play.

The Rams found a running game last week in junior's Davon

Snell and Kendall Morris, who combined for 278 rushing yards

in last week's win against Bourgade.

The Rams Offensive line led by Eric Chavez and

Jacob Dickerson must help control the line of

scrimmage, open up holes for the running game

and give young quarterback Brian Nechamkin time

to throw the ball. A balanced attack is a must

against a team like Coolidge. The Bears will stack

8 or 9 in the box and shutdown the Rams' ground

game, so giving Nechamkin time to throw is a must.

Coolidge is among the best football programs in 3A.

The Bears have 15 returning starters on both sides of the ball.

Coolidge is coming off a (10-3) season losing in the 3A

Championship game. Just like last season Coolidge lost to

Round Valley and Blue Ridge right out the gate, but look for them

to contend for the 3A South Conference title.

Running back Jeremy White will have big shoes to fill with the

graduation of All State running back Brad Jackson. Jackson was

a game breaking runner, who rushed for over 1,600 yards last season.

Coach Hernandez and his staff will have to overcome lack of size

and depth if they are to make another run at a state title.

Good Luck Rams! Play with pride, passion and heart!

Rams hold on for the W

Sept 15th, 2008

The 0-2 Rams picked up their first win on the road Friday night downing the Golden Eagles of Bourgade 28 - 20.

The running back tandem of Davon Snell and Kendall Morris combined for 278 rushing yards. Snell rushed for 189 yards on 15 carries, while Morris picked up 89 yards. Morris had the night's longest run going 62-yards for the TD. Later in the contest Snell found the end zone from 39-yards out.

jr. running back Davon Snell racked up 189 yards on the ground

On the defensive side of the ball cornerback JJ pearson picked off two passes and returned one for a TD. Corner back Vince Bailey recovered a fumble and took it in from 13-yards out. With time running out Bourgade went for the end zone and Rams safety Morris picked off the final pass of game deep in Maricopa territory to seal the victory for the Rams.

The Rams executed great in the first half, but the second half was a different story.

The Rams turned the ball over twice in the second half which led to

Golden Eagle TD's.

Coach Brandt was not pleased with his team's second half performance. During the postgame pep talk he stressed to the team that they needed to play four quarters of football.

Next up for the Rams is the Coolidge Bears. Coolidge has dominated the 3A South Region for years and has gone to the 3A finals the last four years.

Game time is 7p.m at MHS!

Arizona’s top linebackers

August 24, 2008

Here is a pre-season glance at Arizona’s top high school linebackers for the 2008 season.

The list was assembled by Scout.com Southwest Recruiting Analyst Jason Jewell.

Information below can be found on scout.com

1.) Anthony Jones- Hamilton- 6-2 210- I absolutely love this kid’s motor. He makes plays all over the field. Currently holds four D1 offers.

2.) Rueben Robinson- Hamilton- 6-3 215- This Oregon State commit is transitioning from safety where he showed the knack for making the big hit last year.

3.) Anthony Rose- Marcos de Niza- 6-1 200- Pima Region’s defensive player of the year and it is easy to see why. Recorded 145 tackles and 3 sacks. Has committed to Arizona State.

4.) Jake Fischer- Ironwood Ridge- 6-0 225- This tackling machine is a true middle backer. Show nice explosion and is a tough running back as well. Holds offers from Arizona and Colorado.

5.) Reggie Umuolo- Centennial- 5-11 200- The strong and explosive Umuolo has early verbaled to UNLV.

6.) Rodney Reagans- Chandler- 6-1 220- An all-state pick last year at Coolidge, Reagans has transferred to Chandler and is eager to show that he can hang with the big boys in 5A.

7.) Ryan Reardon- Notre Dame- 6-1 215- Tough two-way player, holds an early offer from Army.

8.) Mike Chocholosek- Mt. Ridge- 6-0 205- Earned region defensive player of the year honors after recording 119 tackles.

9.) Ray Cottman- Ironwood Ridge- 6-1 210- This all-region pick as on the verge of getting several mid-major offers. Recorded 102 tackles and 3 sacks last year.

10.) Anthony Greco- Notre Dame- 6-1 215- Also holds an offer from Army, Greco racked up an amazing 145 tackles last year for the 4A2 state champs.

11.) Tommy Brown- Skyline- 6-0 200- An all-region RB and LB, Brown terrorized opponent for 125 tackles as a junior.

12.) Brad Cunningham- Mt. Ridge- 6-0 200- Chocho, Cunningham and Brett Hager might make up the best LB trio in the state.

13.) Jesse Harper- Paradise Valley- 5-10 220- 1st team all-region pick in a tough 4A1 Desert Sky region.

14.) Adam Holzmeister- Brophy- 5-10 190- This kid has a nose for the football. Made a ton of big plays helping the Broncos to the 5A1 state title.

15.) Shad Bride- St. Johns- 5-11 195- Bride is mainly known for his ability as a 2,000+ yard rusher. But he is also a standout linebacker that made 99 tackles last year.

Riser

Steel Armstrong- Blue Ridge- 6-1 210- Not many are talking about this all-state selection that recorded 147 tackles. Blue Ridge always plays tough defense and Armstrong was the leader of that group last year.

Rams KO'd in Round one

Nov 9th, 2007

The Rams of Maricopa fell to the Bulldogs of Winslow 38-13 on Friday night.

The Bulldogs found the end zone in the middle of the first quarter when QB Mathew Smith took it up the middle from 10-yards out, giving the Bulldogs a 6 - 0 lead. The extra point attempt by Stacey Berg failed.

Early in the second quarter Rams QB Will Clemans was picked off by safety Kirk Ramsey. Ramsey returned it 55-yards for the touchdown, giving the Bulldogs a 12 - 0 lead. The two point conversion failed.

Rams running back Matt Fierros returned on the ensuing kick off to the Window 35-yard line. The Rams offense got down to the Winslow 10-yard and went for three. The 20-yard field goal attempt by Fierros was blocked.

With 20 seconds left in the first half Winslow running back John Gonzales found the end zone from 3-yards out. The PAT was successful and the Bulldogs a 21 - 0 lead at the half.

Rams quarterback Clemans was intercepted by Bulldog linebacker Paul Guzman. Guzman returned it 47-yards for the TD. The PAT by Stacey Berg successful, giving the Bulldogs a 31 - 0 lead with 5:13 left in the third quarter.

With return man Tony Jones sidelined due to an ankle injury do-it-all senior Fierros caught the ensuing kickoff and went for 47-yards, giving the Rams great field position. Later in the drive Clemans fired a pass to Blake Schwanbeck from 10-yards out for the TD. The PAT by Schwanbeck was successful cutting the deficit to 31 - 7.

With 7:30 remaining the game Rams quarterback Clemans fired a bomb to his favorite wide-out Cody Seymore. Seymore went 60-yards for the TD. The 2-point conversion failed and the Rams fell to the Bulldogs 38 - 13.

3A Round 1 Maricopa vs. Winslow

Nov 1st, 2007

The Maricopa Rams are taking I-40 east to Winslow on Friday to take on the Bulldogs of Winslow High.

This is the Rams inaugural season at the 3A level, so making it to playoffs is big accomplishment for Coach Brandt and his Rams.

The Rams are peaking at the right time and are riding a three game winning steak. In the past three weeks the Ram have taken down Santa Cruz, Florence, and Globe.

The Rams defensive unit has really turned up the intensity the past three games. The defense is anchored by senior linebacker Matt Fierros, who finished the season with 114 tackles. Brandt will look to look defensive end Tony Jones and nose tackle Derrick Gonzales to reek havoc in the Winslow backfield. Jones finished the season with 15 sacks and is capable of containing the outside running game.

Oct 29th, 2007

The Rams(6-4) of Maricopa High School earned a spot in the 2007 playoffs with a 40-22 victory over The Tigers of Globe High School Friday night. It was the first road win of the season.

The running tandem of Matt "mini bus" Fierros and Blake Schwanbeck tallied 202 yards rushing and four touchdowns for the Rams.

Half way through the first quarter Fierros scampered 18 yards for the TD. The PAT by Fierros was good, giving the Rams a 7-0 lead.

Fierros and Schwanbeck continued to chalk up positive yardage on the ground. The Rams went for it on fourth and five from the Tiger 5-yard line. Quarterback Will Clemans dropped back and found Schwanbeck in the end zone. The extra point attempt failed, but the Rams led 13 - 0 at the half.

On the Rams first possession of the second half quarterback Clemans fired a 25-yard pass to Schwanbeck down the right side. Schwanbeck caught it turned on the jets and took it 40 yards for the TD. The extra point by Fierros was successful, giving the Rams a 20-0 lead.

The Tiger offense found the end zone halfway through the third quarter when quarterback Tober Francom hit Brady Wager across the middle from 11- yards out. The two point conversion run up the gut by Nathan Smith was successful, cutting the Rams lead to 20-8.

Rams return man Cody Seymore caught the ensuing kick at the Ram 15-yard line and took it all the way down to the Tiger 16-yard line, giving the Rams offense great field position. Halfway through the third QB Will "ld" Clemans called his own number and ran the keeper in from four yards out into the corner of the end zone. The extra point by Fierros was successful, giving the Rams a 27-8 lead.

On Globe’s next possession, Francom hit Wager down the left side for a completion deep in Rams territory. Wager was dragged down from behind by Rams cornerback Seymore. With four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Francom ran the keeper up the gut from 1-yard out for the TD. The extra point was successful and the Kitties I mean the Tigers trailed 27-16.

After giving up two touchdowns in the third quarter. The Rams defense redeemed itself when DE Tony "the jet" Jones dropped back, leaped up with one hand and picked off a Francom pass. Jones cut it up field and ran it back 45-yards for a TD. The extra point by Fierros was successful, giving the Rams a comfortable 34-15 lead.

Late in the fourth quarter, Clemans fired a 54-yard missile to his favorite wide out Seymore. Seymore was brought down inside the Tiger 10-yard line. On the next play Fierros went up the middle for his second rushing TD on the night. Fierros missed the extra point, but the Rams led by a score 40-22.

Fierros finished the game with a 148 rushing yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns. Schwanbeck had 60 rushing yards, 70 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Clemans passed for a 154 yards, two touchdowns and ran for another.

The defense was led by nose guard Derrick Gonzales who had eight tackles. Jones picked up his 16th sack of the season and his first interception. Defensive tackle Chris Wilson also had a sack in the contest.

Rams leg out Gophers 10-7 at home

Game photos click here

With 34 ticks remaining on the game clock do-it-all senior Matt "mini bus" Fierros converted on a 35-yard field goal, giving the Rams a 10-7 victory over the visiting Gophers of Florence High.

This was a must win for the Rams to stay in the 3A state playoff chase and for Clemans family bragging rights as cousins Will Clemans and Cash Clemans went head to head.

The Rams defense came ready to play and rose to the occasion early in the first quarter when junior defensive lineman Derrick Gonzales sacked Gopher QB Cash Clemans deep in Gopher territory forcing the Gophers to punt.

On the Gopher’s next possession, Rams DE and state sack leader Tony "the jet" Jones dropped Clemans  in the backfield forcing the Gophers to punt it away. The Rams defense was on fire and forced the Gophers to punt on its three first quarter possessions.

The Rams offensive cylinders starting firing up late in the first quarter when junior running back running back Blake "mad max" Schwanbeck ran for 16-yards and was brought down inside the Gopher 30-yard line. Rams QB Clemans completed an eight-yard pass to wide out Cody Seymore and Matt Fierros ran for eight yards up the middle to end the first quarter.

The Rams offense missed a golden opportunity to get on the board first when they went for it on fourth and goal just inside the one yard line. The Gopher defense stacked the box and blew up the Rams offensive line stopping Clemans on the QB keeper, giving the ball back to Gopher offense.

On second down and one Gopher QB Clemans broke free from three would be tacklers with some shifty moves and  ran up the right sideline for a 59-yard gain. Clemans was caught and brought down from behind by Rams safety  and cousin Will at the Rams 31-yard line.

Later in the drive Clemans hit wide out Andy Martinez for a 24-yard gain. Three plays later Clemans threw a strike Dalton Gay from seven yards out for the TD. The PAT was successful by Martinez, giving the Gophers a 7-0 lead at the half.

On the Rams first possession of the second half Schwanbeck ran up the gut for eight yards, Fierros went for 16-yards up the left side and Clemans ran for 18-yards on the keeper. The Gophers were flagged for a late hit on Clemans out of bounds putting the Rams on the Gopher 29-yard line. Schwanbeck picked up eight more yards landing inside the Gopher ten yard line. On the next play Clemans was tossed like salad and brought down in the back field.

On fourth and four from the Gopher nine yard line, the Rams ran the statue of liberty made famous by Boise State's Ian Johnson. Clemans raised his right arm and hid the ball behind his back with his left hand. Running back Fierros grabbed from Clemans left hand went untouched up the left side for the 9-yard TD. The PAT was by Fierros was successful, tying the game at 7-7.

With Gophers driving for the go-ahead touchdown Rams sophomore safety Kendell Morris got a jump on a Clemans pass and picked it off deep in Rams territory, giving the Rams offense the ball on their own 25 yard line. Two plays later Rams QB Clemans returned the favor and was picked off, giving the ball back to the Gophers.

With time winding down things didn't look good for the Rams, but on the Gopher’s first offensive play, Rams junior cornerback Vince Davis forced a fumbled spun around and recovered the ball.

With time winding down and the score knotted 7-7, the Rams offense put the ball in the hands of running tandem Fierros and Schwanbeck. Fierros picked up 25 yards and, on the next play, Schwanbeck broke some ankles and went for 29 yards.

With 34 ticks remaining on the game clock do-it-all Matt "mini bus" Fierros was as cool as the other side of the pillow, as he converted on a 35-yard field goal, giving the Rams a 10-7 victory over the visiting Gophers of Florence High.

Clemans vs. Clemans Friday 7p.m

Oct 17, 2007

This Friday's homecoming game will be the battle of Will and Cash Clemans.

Rams quarterback Will "LD" Clemans is coming off his best game of the season going 12 of 15 for 180 yards. Clemans threw two TD's and ran for another in a victory over Santa Cruz.

Clemans will look to wide out Cody Seymore to help spread the field. Seymore had a big game last week and I expect a repeat performance. In the middle Clemans will look to tight end Devon Snell. The kid caught six balls against Safford two weeks ago, so look for him to get back on track.

Florence (3-5) quarterback Cash Clemans is also coming off his finest performance of the season in which he completed 12 of 20 for 246 yards. Cash hit Andy Martinez for three scores through the air.

Maricopa (4-4) needs this win to stay in the playoff chase. Clemans and the rest of the offense will have to run a balanced and mistake free offensive attack.

With linebacker Matt "mini bus" Fierros getting less carries offensively he should have a big night defensively. The kid can flat out hit and shutdown a running attack.

Look for defensive end Tony "the jet" Jones to have big night. He should reak havoc in the Florence backfield and come up with a sack or two. If Florence kick offs to him be prepared to see him break one loose.

Linebacker Blake Schwanbeck will help contain the middle of the field. The kid is a competitor and plays with a lot of emotion. Super soph cornerback Vince Bailey has been a clutch performer all season. The kid is just discovering what he is capable of doing from the corner position.

Defensive tackle Chris Wilson needs to play with reckless abandonment and help break into the Florence backfield.

It's the last home game for seniors Wilson, Fierros, Clemans, Seymore, and Jones, so I want give Rams fans a good show.

The Rams have the opportunity to go 5-1 at home this season.

Come out and support them this Friday!

Good Luck Rams!

The Rams defense held the state's leading rusher Pat Cann to 10-yards in the first quarter and kept him and the Dust Devils off the board in the first and fourth quarters. Kudos to the Rams defense for rising to the occasion.

Cann found the end zone twice in the second quarter, and once in the third quarter. Rams sophomore cornerback Vince Bailey picked off a pass in the end zone with seconds left in the game to seal the win for the Rams. Rams Defensive end Tony "the jet" Jones had a safety and sack on the night. Kudos goes to the following defensive players: Blake Schwanbeck, Derrick Gonzales, Vince Davis, Eric Chavez, Chris Wilson, Matt Fierros, Cody Seymore, Felipe Palafox, Santiago Castro, and Kendell Morris.

The Rams fell to the Falcons of Fountain Hills 31 - 19 on Friday night. It was the first home loss this season. The Falcons run defense was impressive and shutdown the Rams running attack all night.

Tony "the jet" Jones is Arizona's No. 1

       sacker.

Sept 18th, 2007

According to Maxpreps.com Tony "the jet" Jones is 5th in the nation and No. 1 in Arizona in quarterback sacks. He is averaging 2.3 per game. Jones who plays defensive end is very quick on the edge and is starting to get noticed in the 3A ranks. The jet has taken on the role of kick returner this season. He had 88 yard return against Bourgade and was arm tackle away from taking two other attempts the distance earlier in the season. The Bears of Coolidge refused to kick off to Jones and were flagged for kicking off out bound on numerous occasions last week. Jones has big play potential and needs to play a role in the offensive game plan. He has found his niche on defense and special teams, so I'm sure on the offensive side of the ball he would be a big contributor.

Saturday morning is day 1 in pads

August 03, 2007

The first day of football practice in pads kicks
off on Saturday morning. The first day in pads is kind of like your first kiss because it's awkward, exciting and nerve racking all at the same time. On the first day in pads, you're all excited, but it's also a little awkward because it's the first time in months you're hitting against other players. And then you're a little nervous because you don't know what to expect.

The kids haven't had any pads on all summer or had any real contact, so they are excited to get back into it. They have been working and waiting for this day to come and it is finally here. Come out and support Ram football! Saturday's practice is 8:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m.

Two-a-days this week!

July 31, 2007

Summer vacation is mostly over for area high school football players. Two-a-day practices started Monday morning, and players at Maricopa High School got a rude awakening. Morning sessions will be held from 8:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m. and evening sessions will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. If your son is participating this season please make they drink plenty of water before and after practice.

The focus during two-a-days is conditioning and covering basic fundamentals and footwork.

Car wash for Zach Schumann nets $1087.12 for family

July 22, 2007

On Saturday morning when I arrived at Ramsey's at 5:45 a.m I was greeted by rain and wet streets. I thought to myself how can we have a benefit car in the rain?

As I looked up in the grey skies and told Football
Booster Club President Shawn Barnicle this is
either a blessing in disguise or we have to postpone till next weekend. At about 8:00 a.m the clouds began to break apart and so the car wash began.

Waking up at 5:30 a.m on a Saturday is a lot to ask of teenage boys, but they made it to the car wash one at a time. As I was driving in from the Meadows I saw one of the player's walking to Ramsey's at 5:40 a.m and yes I did pick him up and give him a ride.

Cheer Coach Shay Charles and her squad made signs and hit the main intersections to promote the car wash. The cheer team helped with promoting and washing. Thanks for all the your hard work and dedication girls. As the car wash began we starting running low on towels, so Shay went home and got more. She also stopped at AutoZone and they donated buckets, soap, glass cleaner, and tire cleaner. Special thank you to AutoZone for helping us out.

Shay made a trip to Fry's for some bottled water and ice. Once she got back we headed over to Pizza Hut and ordered ten large pizzas for kids. The manager gave us the best discount he could, so that was good enough for me and for the kids.

A Variety of cars began to show up in the morning. We washed two City of Maricopa Police Department cars and I told the boys this is as close as they should ever come to a police car. A few of them wanted me to take some pictures of them in the back seat, so I did. We washed a black Hummer, some jeeps, two lifted trucks, a Harley, some Honda accords, a Jaguar, and a Maxima. The list goes on and on. Special thanks goes out to Mike Chance from Impact Windshield he was the big donor of the day. He gave me a check for fifty dollars and we didn't even wash his truck.

We raised $1087.12 for The Schumann Family. For those that didn't make it to the car wash, donations to the Zachary Schumann fund can be made at any Wells Fargo branch.

Zachary is preparing for an upcoming stem cell rescue procedure that will keep him at Tucson’s University Medical Center for at least two more months. All donations will help the family with some of their medical expenses. You can read Zachary's story and blog written by his loving mom Sara by clicking here.

Schumann Family we hope the money we raised we help you out in some sort of way. Good luck with the stem cell rescue transplant.

Zachary, we want to see you at the Ram football games this football season. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Special thanks to Ramsey for letting us use his water and parking lot!
